Grading
Best Practices
- Grades should be realistic and timely - students should never be surprised by a grade
- Grades should be connected to the value of an activity or deliverable (i.e. grades are not earned for attendance)
-
Use clear assignment sheets & rubrics - this is best for you and the students
- Provide enough feedback so that students can progressively do better, but do not critique/grade unnecessary components
- Allow for resubmitting work where appropriate
- Be aware of trends in your own grading
Have questions related to grading? Reach out to your Program Coordinator or Associate Dean.
Grade Ranges
-
Below 50% - Absence of competence. Specifications not met.
- We must be comfortable telling students when they have not met requirements
-
50-59% - Very basic competence
-
60-69% - Competence is demonstrated, there are areas requiring significant improvement
-
70-79% - Competence is consistent, areas of improvement are evident, foundation is evident
-
80-89% - Competence is very consistent, areas of slight improvement, solid skills are evident
-
90-95% - Rare mastery and competence, no obvious room for improvement
-
96-100% - Student should be teaching the module, no room for any improvement
Mid-Term & Final Grades
Every student must receive midterm and final grades through MyHumber by the deadlines posted on the Academic Calendar. The deadlines are very important as many procedures flow from grade postings. If you anticipate a problem meeting the deadline, please let your program coordinator or associate dean know as far in advance as possible.
Grades must be allotted in keeping with the information listed on the Course Outline and should reflect the running tally in GradeBook on Blackboard.
We do not grant or dock grades for attendance.
IMPORTANT
Email your program coordinator (cc your associate dean) a spreadsheet including all student grades, attendance, anddetailed notes on students who are not passing at the end of the semester. This allows for clear communication with students around their record of performance in your absence.
