My Corporate Communications Journey: Carina Paoletti

By: Carina Paoletti

Humber student and founder of Woof-A-Palooza, Carina Paoletti, describes her experience in the Corporate Communications program at Humber College.

"We are storytellers - Tell us your story!"

1. Describe your event, Woof-A-Palooza.

Woof-A-Palooza is a non-profit organization that exists to engage the dog community and promote for responsible pet ownership, while also creating awareness for animal shelters and rescue organizations. The organization hosts an annual outdoor event in the City of Vaughan (which will be headed into it's fourth year in June 2019) along with other pet related activation's throughout the year.

2. Why are you interested in learning Corporate Communications?

I am interested in learning about Corporate Communications because in my role as an Animal Control Officer for nearly eight years, I was the face of the organization and with that came a level of communication that was to be expected. I became more involved in volunteering with organizations in my community which peaked my interest further in the public relations field, where I would soon learn my focus would be in marketing and content writing. I love being creative and felt that I had a knack for this 'pr thing'.

3. What was your first day of class like?

My first class was online; Introduction to Public Relations, so I would have to say I really enjoyed my own company (I'm joking of course).

My second course was in class and if I'm not mistaken it was Media Relations with Mr. Applebaum. I felt right at ease and excited about the content and the people I would meet, after all they may be people just like me who are starting on a different career path in their life.

4. What was your favourite topic to learn in class?

My favourite topic was writing for business and media. Growing up I was an avid reader and I loved to write stories, poems, and journal. As I got older and busier with life I lost touch with this, until this class reconnected me with my inner author (as corny as that may sound). I began to allow my creative juices to flow again and I was more conscious of my writing style and being too 'wordy', while also being mindful of the errors when writing for corporations and the media.

5. How do you apply what you've learned at Humber to your career?

I have applied the majority of what I've learned at Humber to all of my projects starting with Woofapalooza, and continuing with all the organizations I work with from time to time. The skill set I have developed has encouraged me to do more and has given me the confidence to envision and achieve where I want to take my career in Public Relations.

6. Anything else you would like to share?

I have always been passionate about animals and I have always tried to be the voice for those who could not speak. I have worked for many years in the pet industry and one day I realized I was fighting a never ending battle, the only way I could make a difference and implement change was to learn how to navigate into public relations. The Public Relations program at Humber College was able to nurture the seed I had planted inside of me, and this in part was due to the wonderful instructors they chose to deliver their curriculum.

This is my heartfelt 'thank you' to Humber College, not only for the Public Relations program but also for the Municipal Bylaw Enforcement Program I completed in 2010 which helped me achieve a memorable career in Animal Control. You never stop learning in life and Humber College has made me realize there is always opportunity to enrich my knowledge.
