Hi there! If you were to know one thing about me, you would know that I always go above and beyond. This can apply to school, but it also applies to other things in my life such as my jobs, hobbies, and relationships. Continuously pushing myself to do more than people expect is an essential part of who I am, and it helps me learn new things every day.
The four essential pillars encompass human-centric design approach and the understanding of full-bodied, three dimensional physical interaction of user, product and environment. The projects generate innovative solutions using research-driven, evidence-based designs which focus on the user experience.
The design reduces pain by supporting the lower back and hips of seniors.
It also increases their strength using artificial motorized tendons. This means that seniors can continue participating in the active activities that they have always enjoyed.
The batteries can be removed to wash the fabric brace.
To remove a dead battery, the user can flip over the fabric wrap and pull the battery housing away from the motor housing. The motors can be washed while attached to the brace because they are waterproof. The brace is sold in two pieces, so seniors can choose to just use the upper part, or just use the lower part, depending on their needs.
The design fits the user snugly to maximize support. The material is stretchy and soft, offering comfort and a wide range of movement.
The brace would be sold in sizes small, medium, and large. Since the stomach size of seniors can vary even more significantly than these standard clothing size options can accommodate, the waist strap is also adjustable so that it can be further customized to ensure maximum comfort.
The aging population has caused an excess burden on the medical system.
AlwaysAble enables seniors to stay active and healthy, so they are less dependent on healthcare services. The design is also made from biodegradable and recyclable materials such as hemp, bamboo viscose, natural rubber, and recycled nylon, making it a sustainable solution.
The aging population strains the healthcare system, prompting a shift towards preventative care. Encouraging seniors to stay active benefits their physical and mental health and can reduce loneliness if physical activities are conducted in group settings. However, many seniors struggle to stay active, worsening health outcomes. This thesis aimed to design a mobility-enhancing product to make exercise easier for seniors. Research on senior lifestyles, abilities, and interests guided the design process. Initially focusing on outdoor activities, it evolved to improve senior mobility in general. The resulting product has the potential to transform senior exercise, enhancing their quality of life and alleviating strain on the healthcare system.
