Program Overview

The truth-telling role of journalism has never been more important than it is today. Humber’s Bachelor of Journalism degree program helps you develop all of the skills you will need to report on the biggest and most compelling stories in your community and around the world. Journalism is the perfect field for students with a desire to inform and engage the public. In addition to traditional skills like critical thinking, researching, reporting and interviewing, you will also learn how to use audio, text, video, and photos to create compelling online stories for a wide range of digital platforms.

You will study both the theoretical and practical aspects of journalism, and you’ll do it using the latest industry-standard hardware and software in Humber’s Newsroom. You will have access to and learn from instructors with deep and varied journalism experience. You will have the chance to pursue your interests with journalism classes that will teach you to cover sports, arts, politics, lifestyle and more. Breadth education electives will help you expand your knowledge in a variety of areas.

Our program has been designed with input from journalists and media professionals ensuring that it provides the skills required for a wide variety of journalism careers.

Note: This program will be relocating to the North Campus in September 2025. Students who begin the program in Fall 2022 or later will complete the latter part of the program at the North Campus.

Work-Integrated Learning  

Students will gain practical, hands-on experience in the industry by completing a mandatory which takes place in the summer semester between Years 3 and 4. After completing a preparation course, students will be supported in marketing themselves to prospective employers in order to find a that aligns with their personal career goals.

Media & Creative Arts Students Vote for the Future

Students from more than eight Media & Creative Arts programs worked with Villamedia to test the company's AI-driven generative art project, Vote for Peace, and to learn how the technology may be used in the future.

Tell, Share, and Shape Your Stories

In the digital age, journalists have far more reach than ever before to tell stories, share images, and shape opinions. As media organizations change to meet the demands of the public, there are opportunities for people with modern skill sets to begin their careers. Use your digital and social media skills to succeed in the evolving fields of journalism and communications. Human Resources and Skills Development Canada forecasts that media and communications job openings will increase over the next decade.

The Newsroom features new and improved workspaces for students working on individual projects and collaborating to cover breaking news stories.

It also houses a series of fully equipped video and audio edit suites. Students will also be able to use a Dejero, allowing them to stream video live from virtually any location. The technology also allows multiple classes to be taught at the same time.

The Newsroom reinforces the digital journalism focus of the program, it adds to the technical proficiency of our students, keeping them at the cutting edge of the industry.

StoryLab is commited to data-driven storytelling. It fosters multidisciplinary opportunities for Humber staff, students, and industry partners, including Data-Driven--a data journalism symposium for coders, investigative reporters, developers and data advocates--and collaborative journalism projects such as Surviving Hate.

The Faculty of Media & Creative Arts HD TV Mobile is a multi-camera television facility used for remote broadcast television production. The mobile contains all the high definition broadcast television equipment found in a television studio, but has the ability to travel to an event to cover it live.

It is a complete broadcast facility on wheels, with 6 HD broadcast television cameras, production switcher, audio console, camera control, digital recording and non-linear editing, slow motion replay and 3D graphic generator. It has the ability to record an event, or feed live to web stream, with satellite or terrestrial transmission.

The HD Television Mobile offers a “real-world” broadcast production experience for students, using “state-of-the-art” equipment found in similar industry facilities. Students learn and practice the exact skills that they will need after graduation.

Matt Elliott

A Toronto-based writer with an interest in local politics, urban issues, mobility, technology and data visualization, Matt Elliott has contributed columns and analysis about Toronto city hall and urban affairs to outlets like the Toronto Star, CBC Toronto, Metro News and many others. He also founded and writes City Hall Watcher, a weekly independent newsletter covering municipal politics that has been cited internationally as an example of a local-news success story. Matt has been teaching part-time in the Bachelor of Journalism program since 2014.

Shenaz Kermalli

Shenaz Kermalli is a freelance writer and journalism lecturer at Humber College, Ryerson University and University of Toronto. She is a former producer and writer with Al Jazeera English, BBC News, and CBC Television. Her writing has appeared in The Globe and Mail, The Toronto Star, The Guardian, Foreign Policy and The Ottawa Citizen, among others. Shenaz holds an MA degree in Near and Middle Eastern Studies from the School of Oriental and African Studies in the UK and a BA in Journalism Studies from the University of Sheffield.

Steven May is a professor in Humber College's Faculty of Media & Creative Arts. May holds a PhD in Communication & Culture from Toronto Metropolitan (Ryerson) University and York University. His core research interest is television distribution in the digital age.

Siobhan Moore

Siobhan Moore is a former newspaper journalist who worked in newsrooms in Nova Scotia and Toronto newsrooms until she decided she could contribute more by helping journalism students learn how to work in an industry beset by the tumult of the internet. Siobhan has an honours degree in English literature degree from Mount Allison University and a master of arts in journalism from the University of Missouri. Siobhan is a co-author and editor of the second Canadian edition of Reporting for the Media published by Oxford University Press.

Dan Rowe

Dan Rowe is a professor, and the program coordinator of Humber College's Bachelor of Journalism program. His writing has been published by a range of Canadian publications and he is the author of a textbook on feature writing published by Oxford University Press Canada. Dan has a PhD in mass communications from Syracuse University's Newhouse School. He has also taught journalism courses at Ryerson, Laurier Brantford, and Syracuse.

Richard Warnica

Richard Warnica teaches feature writing in the Bachelor of Journalism program. He is a business feature writer at the Toronto Star and a former reporter, feature writer and editor for, among others, the National Post, Maclean's, Canadian Business, the Edmonton Journal and the Tyee.ca. He has been a finalist of the National Newspaper Awards in column writing, feature writing and international reporting and the National Magazine Award in column writing. He has a graduate degree in journalism from the University of British Columbia, a bachelor of political science from the University of Victoria and was the 2018-19 Webster/McConnell Fellow at Massey College at the University of Toronto.

Jessica Wolfe

Jessica Duffin Wolfe teaches interactive design and digital storytelling in the Digital Communications, Journalism, and Film degree programs at Humber’s Lakeshore campus. Before joining Humber, she completed a PhD in English, Book History, and Print Culture, and worked as a critic, magazine editor, and web developer. She’s taught previously at OCAD University and the University of Toronto, and is working to develop Humber’s immersive storytelling capacity. Our program puts you on the inside track to this challenging and fast-paced profession.

When you graduate, you will be ready to experience the thrill of reporting on important local, national and international news, as well as sports, entertainment and lifestyle stories with the reward of keeping audiences up-to-date with informative, compelling stories. You will reflect the world back to audiences across today’s multimedia spectrum where information can be accessed through print, broadcast, the web and mobile media. Reporting live from the scene of breaking news, you will learn to craft informative stories about current affairs and put issues and trends into context with insightful analysis.

In addition to journalism, you will have the skills to pursue a career as a web content producer, media relations manager, editor, communications specialist and researcher, as well as a variety of positions relating to digital media production
