Project Overview

This thesis project stems from my profound connection as a former student athlete at Humber, where I spent 5 transformative years as part of the Women's Volleyball Team. Understanding firsthand the needs of athletes, I envisioned the Varsity Athletic Resource Center as a sanctuary for student athletes to RELAX, RECHARGE, and REJUVENATE. Located at 3120 Lake Shore Blvd W, amidst Humber College's campus, the center embraces biophilic design principles, integrating natural elements to foster serenity. With a holistic approach, it aims to elevate well-being, enhance performance, and alleviate stress. Inspired by the symmetry of sport courts, the design ensures balance, guiding movement and empowering athletes on their collegiate journey.

Concept/Design Process

The Concept/Design Process for the Varsity Athletic Resource Center is deeply rooted in the experiences and insights gained as a former student athlete at Humber College. Drawing inspiration from the boundary lines of various sport courts, the design explores the notion of pushing boundaries while maintaining balance, mirroring the challenges and triumphs athletes encounter both on and off the field.

Through structured thresholds within the building's connective spaces, athletes will transition seamlessly from the intensity of training to the tranquility of relaxation. The floor plan strategically pushes these thresholds, creating structured environments that offer respite from the chaotic demands of athletic life, fostering holistic well-being and empowerment.

Site Plan/Floor Plan(s)

The floor plan of the Varsity Resource Centre boasts a diverse array of spaces, including a vibrant Cafe, expansive Open Study Areas, secluded Private Study Rooms, versatile Meeting Rooms, a state-of-the-art Video Room, tranquil Quiet Study Area, rejuvenating Recovery Room, and a blissful Relaxation Zone, complemented by dedicated Male and Female Change Rooms. Designed with a thoughtful balance of structure and openness, athletes can navigate the space effortlessly, ensuring swift access to the resources essential for their needs, enhancing their overall experience within the centre.
