Rozlyn's love for interior design and the built environment has been engrained in her from a young age. Accessibility and sustainability are both areas in which she has found an interest and a strong connection during her studies. Her ethos is to design spaces which harmonize the needs of all users through accessibility and functionality, while also protecting the environment through sustainability and adaptive systems.
Pebble Community Centre is a space designed for seniors that provides connection and restoration through eco-therapy-based activities. The community centre is located at 1402 Queen Street West in the historic town of Alton just north of Mississauga. Combining both biophilic design and activity-based theory, the centre provides users with programs for stimulation and relaxation through animal therapy.
The concept of ripples in a body of water comes from the process of dropping a pebble into the water. Providing seniors with a safe and supportive space allows users to deeply connect with others while partaking in physically and mentally stimulating activities to improve their health. "Pebble Community Centre is creating ripples within the senior community."
Pebble Community Centre is located at 1402 Queen Street West in the historic Alton Mills building. The surrounding neighbourhood and area include coffee shops, residential homes and outdoor parks along walking paths such as the Bruce Trail. The surrounding waterfall and forests provide a unique opportunity for seniors to be closer to nature through the views both to and from the community centre.
Each level of the centre houses various activities and uses for the users. The lower floor includes an interior and exterior dog walking path and private animal therapy; this floor will provide the most physical interaction for seniors while walking and petting the dogs. The first floor includes a social seat with a waterfall feature, cafe and gym; this floor will get the most social interaction for seniors to connect with other users. The second floor includes a garden studio, clay studio, paint studio and personal care spaces; this floor will provide the most physical and mental stimulation for the seniors through such activities.
The section and elevation views aim to highlight the contrast between the natural landscape and the building. Focal point elevations key into the key spaces on each level.
The 3D renderings showcase how biophilic design and stimulating activities are combined to support the needs of seniors within the building. Within these renderings details such as custom armrests and handrails support the needs of users while navigating through the centre. Organic shapes and the use of three colour pallets per floor assist in the user's wayfinding and navigation throughout the centre.
