Hello, my name is Serena Hardman and I am finishing my fourth year of the Bachelor of Interior Design program at Humber College. I have a strong passion for design and human psychology and love connecting the two to show how design can positively impact the world we live in.
My thesis revolves around the design of a birth center focused on holistic maternal care outside of the traditional hospital setting. This project aims to explore how interior design can contribute to creating a nurturing and supportive environment for expectant mothers, emphasizing holistic care principles that prioritize physical, emotional, and psychological well-being during the birthing process. The decision to focus my thesis project on designing a birth center stems from a deeply held belief in the transformative power of interior design to positively impact people's lives, particularly during significant life events such as childbirth. This project provides an opportunity to showcase the potential of design to enhance the birthing experience and contribute to improved maternal outcomes, making it a compelling and meaningful choice for my thesis endeavor.
Transition refers to the process of change or movement from one state, condition or situation to another. It involves a shift or progression from one set of phases to a different one. Transitions can be gradual or abrupt and are fundamental aspects of growth, adaptation and evolution in life.
Transition in a The Birth Centre encapsulates not just the physical process of childbirth, but also the emotional journey and the continuity of care that fosters a supportive and nurturing environment. The concept of transition is explored through life paths lines where each curve and undulation serve as metaphors for life paths, weaving together moments of joy, challenge, and growth.
The Ossington site offers tree-lined streets and parks that provide a more relaxed suburban vibe. Residents in these areas enjoy easy access to local amenities such as schools, parks, and community centers, while still being within reach of downtown Toronto for work or leisure activities due to it’s easy access to public transportation.
The floor plans reflect a thoughtful approach to space utilization, with well-defined zones for various activities and clear circulation paths to enhance user experience and accessibility. Each element of the design has been thoughtfully curated to create a harmonious and inviting environment that meets the needs and aspirations of all of its users.
The focal area of the birth center encompasses the reception, concept hallway, birth suite, and visitor lounge, and is designed to embody the concept of transition and life paths. Upon entering the reception area, families are greeted with a sense of warmth and tranquility, setting the tone for their journey ahead.
The concept hallway serves as a symbolic passage, adorned with a scaling path that represents the stages of life and the transformative nature of childbirth. Transitioning from the hallway into the birth suite, the space is designed to promote a sense of empowerment and comfort, with adjustable lighting, soothing colors, and ergonomic furnishings to support mothers during labor and delivery. The visitor lounge, strategically located adjacent to the birth suite, offers a welcoming space for family members and loved ones to gather and support the birthing process.
