How a Continuing Education Photography Student Became a Professional Photographer

By: Geneviève Grenon

Continuing Education student, Geneviève Grenon, describes her photography experience at Humber College.

"I was constantly grasping and creating opportunities to photograph everything and anyone who would let me."

It all started in 2008 when, Ozzie-now my husband- bought me my very first DSLR camera.  The next few years were spent capturing life events and milestones in the point and shoot automatic mode.  In January 2012, about 3 months after the birth of our son Jonathan, I was already attending my first photography class here at Humber.  I’ll always remember nervously arriving on campus the first time as I tried to find the right parking lot, building and classroom. I still feel those butterflies in my stomach before each session.

2013 to 2014 were bridged by slowly attending more classes.  Squeezing in Photoshop, lighting and creative assignments between working full time as a flight attendant and family responsibilities. I was constantly grasping and creating opportunities to photograph everything and anyone who would let me.  Little did I know I was hooked on capturing people.  I had finally found my niche!

In late 2014, I served an eviction notice to the spare bedroom in our family home and there was born, Geneviève Photo Studios, my very first portrait studio. It was a cozy 10 by 10 room with the most perfectly large window for lighting my subjects. I continued to take photos and work on my niche - mommies, babies and ladies are my thing!

"I’m proud to say that I’ve gone from point and shoot to owning and operating my own studio experience."

Last year, I launched my first website and moved to a new home where the studio now occupies a full floor. In summary, five quick years have passed since taking my first class.  Education, simmering passion and daily hard work have brought me here today as a professional photographer. I’m proud to say that I’ve gone from point and shoot to owning and operating my own studio experience. All this to say, trust your knowledge, take risks by pushing your boundaries and most of all value yourself.
