My 3D Journey: Jana Hafez

By: Jana Hafez

Alumni, Jana Hafez, describes her experience in the 3D Modelling and Visual Effects program at Humber College.

"We are storytellers - Tell us your story!"

1. What is your dream career?

My dream career is being a cinematic CG artist. I always had a passion for films and video games, and to be on a team who makes the cinematics and cut scenes would be a dream goal!

2. Why did you choose to study at Humber?

chose to study at Humber because the condensed, one-year certificate was convenient and appealed to me. Humber was also very helpful in facilitating international students.

3. What was your first day of class like?

It was exciting! Although nobody knew anyone, it was interesting meeting so many new classmates from all over the world. The teacher David, was very friendly and made sure to make everyone feel comfortable.

4. What was your favourite topic to learn in class?

We had a lot of freedom in choosing what we wanted to model or work on, which was the beauty of this program. Personally, I enjoyed modeling and creating the 3d assets/characters/environments.

5. What did you like about the program?

The program was a good base as it gave you an intro to everything you need to know in VFX. We had well-equiped labs with professional software and the freedom to use it whenever we wanted.

6. Do you have any advice for future students interested in taking this program?

Do not be afraid to take risks and learn outside the box. Try out new software that are not mentioned in the course. Ask teachers for feedback, make friends, and help each other. Your classmates will be your future contacts in the industry, and maybe your new local CG nerd family (like i have found thankfully), so make use of that.

7. Anything else you would like to share?

Enjoy your time here! This is a very technical, modern and fast-paced field. Some people change what they do or dive into a whole other spectrum. We all get a taste of crunch time and workload during school, but the industry out there will for sure be more challenging, therefore I encourage people to challenge themselves, and think outside the box. Don't be afraid to make your own identity with your work!
