Program Overview

Accessibility is an essential component of effective communication design and advertising. Our courses cover fundamental topics, including accessible typography, colour contrast, layout and structure, alternative text for images, accessible PDF creation, graphics for social media and inclusive design for both web and print materials. You will also explore the importance of inclusive language and learn techniques to enable you to reach a wider audience. Students receive guidance on planning and implementing accessibility features throughout their design process.

Whether you are an experienced content creator or a communication designer looking to expand your skill set, our program is designed to meet your specific needs.

Additional Information:  This is a micro-credential certificate program.  

Upon completion of this Micro-credential, students will be equipped to:

Create accessible content that encompasses inclusive design and copywriting elements enabling effective communication with a broader audience.

Note:  Students pursuing a micro-credential in Accessibility for Content Creators must successfully complete all 3 courses (8 hours total) within a two-semester period.

ADCC 010: Accessible Design 101
ADCC 011: Accessible Document Design
ADCC 012: Accessible Content Design

Compulsory Courses

ADCC 010 Accessible Design 101
  Start Date: February 2024  

In this module, you’ll gain a clear understanding of the Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act (AODA) requirements, principles, and compliance obligations. Learn how to integrate AODA standards into your daily practices and effectively meet accessibility requirements across all forms of communication and web design. This module covers key topics such as accessible communication, physical accessibility, employment standards and the role of organizations in achieving accessibility goals.

CREDENTIAL(S):  This is a compulsory module for both the Accessibility for Content Creators and the Accessibility for Digital Designers micro-credentials.

MICRO-CREDENTIAL:  Learners will receive a digital badge upon successful completion of all 3 modules, either for Accessibility for Content Creators and/or Accessibility for Digital Designers.

Important Information about this Course:

This 2.5-hour course is self-paced and monitored by a facilitator. Learners have from Feb 4 to April 14, 2024 to complete the course.

Refund Policy:  Learners have one day before the module start date to drop the course for a refund.

ADCC 011 Accessible Document Design
  Start Date: May 2024  

Explore strategies to enhance the accessibility of various document types, including PDFs, Word documents, and presentations using Microsoft Office and Adobe InDesign accessibility features. You will understand the importance of proper document structure, formatting, and visual elements to improve readability and navigation. You will learn how to comply with accessibility standards, such as the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG 2.1), to meet legal requirements and ensure your documents are inclusive.

CREDENTIAL(S):  This is a compulsory module for both the Accessibility for Content Creators and the Accessibility for Digital Designers micro-credentials.

MICRO-CREDENTIAL:  Learners will receive a digital badge upon successful completion of all 3 modules, either for Accessibility for Content Creators and/or Accessibility for Digital Designers.

ADCC 012 Accessible Content Design
  Start Date: May 2024  

Explore the intricacies of inclusive content creation, learning how to seamlessly integrate accessibility into your creative process. You will gain practical insights on designing accessible information architecture, optimizing page layout and making thoughtful colour and font choices. You will also discover the art of writing descriptive alternative text for visual elements and how to leverage the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG 2.1) to ensure your content reaches a diverse audience.

CREDENTIAL(S):  This is a compulsory module for the Accessibility for Content Creators micro-credential.

MICRO-CREDENTIAL:  Learners will receive a digital badge for Accessibility for Content Creators upon successful completion of all 3 modules.
