Albert Shin

Albert Shin is an award-winning Korean-Canadian filmmaker, whose work as a director, writer and producer has been featured in major festivals around the world, including the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF), South by Southwest (SXSW), San Sebastian (SSIFF), Locarno and the Berlinale.

His Korean-language breakout feature, In Her Place (2014), a psycho-chamber drama dealing with class, motherhood and adoption won multiple awards around the world and cemented Albert as an emerging voice in filmmaking. His follow-up was the Niagara Falls-set noir mystery, Disappearance at Clifton Hill (2019), inspired by his own time growing up in the unique tourist town and recalling a potential kidnapping he inadvertently witnessed as a child. The film, starring Tuppence Middleton, Hannah Gross and David Cronenberg, premiered at TIFF and was released by IFC Midnight.

In addition, Albert founded the Toronto-based production company Timelapse Pictures along with fellow acclaimed filmmaker Igor Drljaca. Through the company, he’s produced the features Krivina (2012), The Waiting Room (2015), The Stone Speakers (2018) and The White Fortress (2020), the last of which was Bosnia-Herzegovina’s selection for the Foreign Language Academy Award.

Albert is currently in development with Bell Media on a scripted limited series, The Seoul Palace, based on the origins of Lee’s Palace, the iconic rock concert venue that was founded by a group of dreaming and scheming Korean immigrants. He’s also developing a feature adaptation of The Foreign Student based on a novel by National Book Award-winning and Pulitzer Prize-nominated author Susan Choi.
