For more than a decade, the Humber School for Writers has partnered with the City of Toronto to bring some the best Canadian authors, including numerous Humber School for Writers faculty and graduates, to the historic Assembly Hall. Since 2017, the partnership has expanded to include the Toronto International Festival of Authors.

The Word On The Street/Word Vancouver

Humber School for Writers participates in The Word on the Street Toronto, The Word on the Street Halifax, and Word Vancouver. In Toronto, HSW has traditionally programmed a full day of panels in the Wordshop Marquee.

Toronto International Festival of Authors: LitJam, Black Box Session

HSW has a longstanding relationship with the Toronto International Festival of Authors.

Currently, Humber participates in the annual LitJam, a literary improv competition, with other local creative writing programs. In 2018, the Humber squad took first place and had their story published in NOW Magazine.

This year, Humber will also present The Black Box Session, a live taping of HSW’s upcoming Love and Defiance podcast. David Bezmozgis, director of the Humber School for Writers, will interview a Humber alumnus whose writing has been informed by their extraordinary life experiences.

Toronto Star Short Story Contest

Recognized as one of the most lucrative short story prizes in North America, the Toronto Star Short Story Contest has identified promising new short fiction writers in Ontario since 1978. HSW is a proud sponsor of the contest. Its mentors read all the submissions and recommend the top 30 to the jury. Humber also provides the winning writer full tuition to either the Graduate Certificate in Creative Writing program or the Summer Workshop in Creative Writing. Read about the 2018 winners here.

The FOLD Brampton

HSW is a proud sponsor of the Festival of Literary Diversity in Brampton. The Festival of Literary Diversity is the only one of its kind, featuring some of the best and most important writers who will share their work, their insight, and their experiences in the heart of historic downtown Brampton– one of Canada’s most diverse cities. Through its sponsorship, HSW supports The FOLD’s mission to increase the visibility of authors and literary works that tell the stories of the marginalized and underrepresented.

The Power Plant Gallery Contemporary Art Gallery

HSW has partnered with the Power Plant Contemporary Art Gallery to enable an HSW student or graduate to reflect, write and present a piece on a current gallery exhibit. As part of the Power Plant Gallery’s Sunday Scene program, the partnership affords HSW and the Power Plant the opportunity to bring artists together across disciplines.

HSW/Creative Book Publishing Apprenticeship

In its first year, this initiative brings together a select number of HSW graduate certificate students who have an interest in self-publishing with students from Humber’s esteemed Creative Book Publishing program. Through an apprenticeship, Creative Book Publishing students shepherd a manuscript from copyedit to encoding for ebook, and craft a marketing and publicity plan. The partnership is one of a kind and leverages the talents in the Humber School for Writers and in the Creative Book Publishing program.

PEN Canada Writer-in-Exile Scholarship

In the fall semester, as part of its commitment to supporting emerging and marginalized voices, HSW provides a full scholarship to one exiled writer who has found refuge in Canada through the aid of PEN Canada. The partnership is intended to provide talented refugee writers with the chance to practice their craft, enter into a professional dialogue with a Canadian author, and, ideally, create a book that will offer a new and valuable perspective to Canadians about the world we live in.

Hot Docs Series

HSW is a media supporter of the Author Events at the Hot Docs Ted Rogers Cinema. Hot Docs presents some of the most compelling writers from Canada and the United States.

University of Gloucester

Graduates of HSW’s graduate certificate program are eligible for advanced standing in the University of Gloucestershire’s distance Master of Arts in Creative Writing program. For those who qualify, this pathway can also lead to a PhD.
