Radio and Media Production
Program Overview
In Humber’s Radio and Media Production graduate certificate program, students develop the skills to make entertaining and engaging broadcasts and podcasts. Imagine combining the experience of your degree or diploma with new skills in audio storytelling and broadcasting. Graduates of our program are working in all aspects of radio and podcast production across Canada. Many are instrumental in some of Canada's most popular podcasts, and some have been recognized at the 2019 Canadian Podcasting Awards.
Students get hands-on experience in:
- radio and audio production studio techniques
- on-air announcing
- podcast hosting
- newscast performance and sports reporting
- hosting live music and public affairs programs
- writing stories, shows, commercials and scripts
- radio programming
- promotions
- interviewing techniques and more
They produce exciting audio and visual content including video and podcasts in Humber’s leading-edge production studios.
Students learn about the latest trends and developments in broadcasting and podcasting, and prepare for careers in media production including on-air, on-camera, online and social media. They create original digital audio content and experience the thrill of having their work distributed by broadcast on the radio, podcast streaming or other means including social media.
Students take intensive classes and workshops with expert faculty where they apply their new skills to studio and broadcast operations. By second semester, students can perform live in our streaming or broadcast radio stations as a music host, newscaster or announcer. Hands-on training in on-air performance is provided through Humber’s student radio station, 96.9FM, which is also streamed online and through various listening apps. Students will focus on creative studio production techniques and on-air operations and on virtual online production techniques.
Courses
At Humber, courses are delivered in a variety of formats:
In-Person - An in-person course is delivered fully on campus.
Online Asynchronous (A) - An online asynchronous course has no fixed class schedule and allows students to engage with the course at different times according to their needs. Faculty provide modules, which are completed independently by the students according to established deadlines.
Online Synchronous (S) - An online synchronous course is delivered fully online and requires faculty and students to participate in real-time according to a fixed schedule. Classes are scheduled for a specific day and time.
Hybrid - A hybrid course is a combination of in-person and online classes and follows a set schedule. Students must be available to attend in-person classes at scheduled times during the semester.
The chart below outlines the delivery options available for each course in this program, by campus. For some academic terms, there may be more than one delivery option available. You’ll be able to select your preferred options when building your course schedule during open enrolment. Preferences for course delivery will be considered on a first come, first served basis. Some Humber programs are also delivered fully online, where all courses are delivered online.
International students: the impact of studying from outside of Canada on Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP) eligibility differs significantly based on when you start your program. Please review the PGWP eligibility before choosing your program and course delivery.

Work-Integrated Learning
Students will participate in a mandatory which takes place in the last semester of study. After completing a field experience preparation course, students will be supported in marketing themselves to prospective employers in order to find a field experience that aligns with their personal career goals.

Paul Cross' (Program Coordinator) on-air career spans four decades, as an award-winning newscaster, reporter, music host, talk show host and documentary maker.
Cross Talk comes from desktop studio of Radio professor Paul Cross. Part commentary, part media analysis, Cross Talk is a series that drops as issues in Radio and mass media coverage of current events arise.
Expert Faculty
Kate Evans
Kate Evans is the senior producer and showrunner of CBC's Podcast Playlist and The CBC Podcast Showcase. She is also a podcast columnist with CBC Radio, sharing podcast recommendations and trends on-air across the country. Kate came to the CBC from the world of commercial radio (Indie88, CHUM). Her work was awarded a New York Festivals' Bronze Medal in 2017.
Errol Nazareth
Errol Nazareth is a music journalist and the host of two shows on CBC Radio: Frequencies, which airs across Canada every Tuesday on CBC Music, and Big City Small World, which airs across the GTA every Saturday on CBC Radio One.
He's been playing professionally with words for over 20 years and has written for The Toronto Sun and the alternative weeklies NOW Magazine and Eye Weekly.
Errol teaches in Humber's radio programs, as well as two Media Writing courses and a Music Journalism course at Centennial College. He has also taught journalism at Centennial and at Ryerson University.
He’s judged three butter tart festivals in Ontario over the last few years and counts Public Enemy's Chuck D as a close friend.

Our graduates work as music and talk show hosts, podcast producers, voice-over artists and announcers, creative writers and producers, news and sports personalities and reporters, audio and content producers, program managers, and industry executives.
Recent grads have launched their new careers in podcasting at enterprises including E-One Entertainment, Canada Land, independent productions, and in radio broadcasting at CBC Radio, Bell Media radio stations, 680 News, MyFM, Corus Radio, Zoomer Radio and other radio stations across Canada.
