Program Overview

Humber’s Theatre Arts - Production diploma program provides you with the skills and knowledge needed to launch your career working in the professional theatre industry. You will learn how to build exquisite props, puppets, costumes, set pieces and painted scenery; how to incorporate light and sound into a theatrical performance; and how to serve the collaborative team through stage and production management. You will develop hands-on expertise mounting productions for the Humber Theatre season in partnership with students enrolled in our Theatre Arts - Performance program. The Humber Theatre season is fully integrated with the academic curriculum to ensure a balanced learning environment.

We focus on creative work in a collaborative artistic environment with professional discipline, broad-based training and education in all areas of production for the performing arts, while instilling a commitment to lifelong learning in this constantly changing field.

All of our faculty have substantial industry experience, and part-time instructors have full-time professional careers. As well, professional directors, designers, rehearsal stage managers, fight directors and other specialists outside of the faculty are brought in for the Humber Theatre season and other projects. We hire directors and designers who are known for their unusual and innovative approaches. Their creativity brings constant challenges, excitement and learning opportunities to the Humber Theatre production season and enhances in-class instruction. These professionals often provide our students with contacts, references and employment opportunities.

The Humber Advantage

This section highlights examples of the projects our students executed in classes, where they learn the theory and individual skills for each of the disciplines that make up the broader term Technical Production.

This section highlights the most recent work of our students on theatrical productions, which were either produced in collaboration with the Acting program or industry partners. These productions are the practicum through which students apply the theory, skills, and techniques learned in class to an actual show or event.

Your Career

With more than 90 venues in the Greater Toronto Area (GTA) and many more producing companies, Toronto is the third-largest theatre centre in the English-speaking world. Toronto is also the source of theatre productions, concert tours and industrial shows that tour nationally and internationally.

There are many opportunities behind the scenes for the technicians and craftspeople we train, and our graduates make careers as carpenters, prop builders, puppeteers, conventional and moving light technicians, sound technicians, wardrobe personnel, riggers, and scenic painters.

In the management realm, our graduates work as stage managers, technical directors and production managers. Our graduates also work in related areas of the entertainment industry including cruise ships, theme parks, ice shows, concert tours, industrial presentations, specialized service companies, and film and television. Some graduates form companies collaborating with performers and designers to create original work. Your career may also take you to more senior management positions.
